How to make your startup idea into product

Many people dream of starting their own company and earn millions of dollars. The majority of those people just keep their idea and never try to materialize it. One of the reasons for failure is that they don’t get enough support and guidance to drive their idea into a business and go beyond. Even small businesses fail to advance toward more mature status due to a lack of support and difficulty of finding right people.

I came across this platform while reading Disrupt You! by Jay Samit. A section talked about turning your idea into reality using crowdsource. The author wrote that people who have a great idea but don’t know how to kick off can benefit from this platform.

Since this is an online platform, you can work with talented people from all around the world. Forming a team not limited by physical distance is an appealing point. Imagine the creativity and fresh ideas that the diverse team can feed into your product! Fascinated by the idea, I started reviewing Quirky.

The first page describes how it works. You submit your idea to Quirky, the firm will review your idea, and when you pass their review, you can start building your team. Wait, there is already a filter by the Quirky team. You can’t just start developing your product because you have an idea.

I think this is a necessary step for Quirky otherwise the platform would easily become a flee market. You know what I mean! As I finished signup, I saw something different from my expectation.

Not for Next Internet Giant

The website shows you the list of the products that have already finished development and started their sale. What I can find is most of them is a physical product, not an online product. Maybe my thought was preoccupied with my day job which is IT-related. This is an interesting point. If I get a chance, I would like to ask them why they focus on physical products.

So, if you plan to build a fintech firm or blockchain startup, Quirky is not your source.

Focus on Small Well-Designed Gadgets

If it’s not for online products, can we use the platform to build things like Hyperloop, SpaceX or driverless cars? No! It’s a lot simpler! Let me introduce some of the top selling products to give you an idea.

1 Wrapster

“Wrapster is the ultimate cord management solution, you can say goodbye to tangled earbud headphones. Wrapster’s unique design allows you to wrap your cords vertically, which means more convenience, and less bulk.” – product description.

Development Pace

I believe that you now get an idea of what types of idea will thrive in the Quirky community. Then, how long will a development pace take? Not too long. As I checked development days of several products, it was less then 3 months. In case of Pivot Power, the product page described that it took only several hours for development. So, if you have an idea and know what to do, development can be easily done.

Conclusion

Quirky was an interesting place. It was lighter than I thought. It will be a great crowdsource platform if you have a handy idea. Don’t stay and let your idea die! Go to Quirky and build your team! And, I hope you become successful!
