Haribo Gummy Bears are internationally known jellies that are shaped in a teddy bear in different colors. From outside, they look so pretty that it is hard to miss them. Kids love them. Adults love them too. And, it is easy to find them at a grocery store, a convenient store, a gas station, and more. This post will share my review and analysis of a massive collection of customer reviews about these jellies.
This article will first reveal how consumers think about Haribo Gummy Bears, the trend of the jellies, and my personal experience with them. Then, I will explain in detail about the products and history. Lastly, I will share my customer review analysis that was conducted using over 6,500 reviews. Let’s start with how people think about these jellies!
How Customers Think About Jelly
When you see product introduction from a company, you will always hear great things about it. No company will reveal any weaknesses or defects of the product, obviously. So, as a consumer, it is wiser to doubt what they say and do your own research before making a final purchase decision. Well, a bag of jellies won’t make you broke though. In this section, we will learn how actual users think about jellies. How can we measure these? We can do this by using data analysis techniques called sentiment analysis.
You don’t have to be scared by the technical term. I did the technical part and you can just look at pretty graphs. In this section, I will show you two types of graphs – word cloud and customer sentiment chart. For the analysis, I’ve compiled more than 6,500 customer reviews from Amazon and conducted analysis to summarize them. I will show you the result in a word cloud and a customer sentiments chart. And, lastly, I will share a Haribo Gummy Bears’ Google trend result that shows the level of interest from people.
Word cloud is one of the great and fun ways to understand customer sentiments toward a product or a service. In a word cloud, you can see specific words in different sizes. The larger it is, the more people used that word to describe the product. For this word cloud, I used the titles of the reviews, since people put the essence of their opinions in the title. The 6500+ reviews allowed me to generate an interesting word cloud that let me reach a positive conclusion. Take a look!
Understanding the word cloud is easy. Just follow your eyes and see what you see. You will see that most of the big words are all positive. This means that customers have had a positive experience with the service. People used words like “fivestars”, “yummy”, “love”, “great”, “delicious”, and more positive terms to describe this gummy bear.
Among them, “fivestars” was the most frequently used term to describe the product. When you don’t put your review title on Amazon, they use your star rate as a title. This means that many people gave the jelly five stars out of five, which is very positive rating.
In the word cloud, we were able to observe what descriptive words people used to talk about Haribo Gummy Bears. As mentioned, the word cloud is based on the titles of customer reviews, but the sentiment analysis graph was generated by the contents of the reviews. In the sentiment analysis, we will see more specific types of feeling that people showed in their review. In the analysis, you can see 10 different sentiments such as positive, negative, trust, anticipation, joy, fear, sadness, anger, surprise, and disgust.
The technology behind the chart is straightforward. The analysis algorithm holds 10 different lists – each list containing words that are mapped to one of the 10 sentiments. When this algorithm runs, it checks and matches with one of the sentiments. When matched, it is counted as one and is categorized in one of the 10 sentiments. My analysis on the positive reviews appears as below.
The chart is also not difficult to understand. You can see that the positive sentiment is ranked number one. The first rank is followed by “negative”, “trust”, “fear”, “sadness” and “anticipation”. It does have negative opinions, but overall, people expressed more positive sentiments than negative ones.
So my customer review analysis told me that many people has a positive experience with the product. If you go and find customer reviews on Amazon, however, you may be worried by negative feedbacks. It seems like they used dramatic words for the Haribo Gummy Bears. But, when I combined all of the reviews, the majority (more than 50 percent) of the reviews was positive. So, I believe that it is safe to conclude that people overall had a good experience with the gummies.
As the final segment of analysis, let me share the trend of Haribo Gummy Bears. I used Google Trend to check how frequently “haribo gummy bears” is searched on Google over the past 5 years. Google Trend is a useful tool to measure the interest of people. The more frequently people search on Google, the more popular or trendy it is. The Google Trend result below (not visible on mobile phones) for the gummy bears below shows that people have consistently shown an interest in this gummy over the past five years.
In addition to this trend line, we can see which region mostly searched for this product. As the list shows, you can see that the United States showed the biggest interest over the gummy. It is followed by Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Considering my customer review analysis and the trend line from Google, this confectionary product is likely to maintain its popularity and brand recognition for years to come.
My Personal Experience with Haribo Jellies
Let me also share my personal experience with Haribo Gummy. I have two young boys. When my wife and I prepared my older son’s birthday party, we made some goodie bags for his friends. We bought a large bucket that contains 100 small bags of Haribo Gummy Bears. I tasted some of them and felt that the texture was harder than expected. Although the taste itself was good, it was hard to chew a bit.
But it seems that my son’s friends during the birthday party didn’t care. They just liked the colorful gummies. I think if you like chewy jellies, you would like them.
About Gummy Bears
We have discovered how people think about Haribo Gummy Bears. In this section, we will discover facts about Haribo and its products and the company’s history. According to the definition by Wikipedia, gummy bears are fruit gum candies that are roughly 2 cm long and shaped in a bear (teddy bear). These gummy bears are originated from Germany. Hans Riegel, the founder of Garibo, started the confectionary firm in 1920. I was surprised that it has such a long history.
An interesting fact behind the bear shape is that one day, the founder watched the trained bears during street festivals and got inspired by them. He applied the inspiration to the company’s products and invented the Dancing Bear. It was small, affordable, and fruit-flavored gummy candies for children and adults. The success of these candies later become Gold Bears candy in 1967. Later, the Gold Bears became globally famous.
Haribo has various gummy candies in different shapes and sizes. This section will introduce some of their products including Gummy Bears, Starmix, Twin Snakes, Happy Cola, Dinosaurs, and Smurfs.
Haribo Goldbears is the flagship product of Haribo. This gummy candy has been around the world for 90 years and the best selling gummy bear in the U.S. Haribo is Goldbears and Goldbears is Haribo. A bag has five different flavors such as lemon, orange, pineapple, raspberry, and strawberry. Haribo Goldbears also another version that has a mild sour flavor with tangy coating. This product comes in three different sizes – 5 oz, 14 oz and 10 oz in a resealable bag.
If you want to try different types of Haribo gummies, pick Starmix. A Starmix bag contains all of the Haribo gummies in a single bag. It has Goldbears, Twin Snakes, Happy Cola, Happy Cherries, and Gummi Rings. I would personally love to try this one since I like having these different gummies from a single bag. This product comes in three different sizes – 4 oz, 5 oz, and 8 oz.
Haribo Twin Snakes
Of course, the snakes! Snake shapes are popular among gummy products, and Haribo also has them. The texture and shape are too fun to ignore. Kids also love snake gummies thanks to their unique shape. A Twin Snakes bag has sweet and sour flavor mixture: cherry & orange, apple & lemon, and blueberry & blackcurrant. They also come in 4 oz, 5 oz, and 8 oz.
Haribo Happy Cola
Cola is one of my favorite flavors whether it’s candy or gummy. When I taste it, I can feel the freshness that the flavor gives. Happy Cola is shaped in a bottle with two different colors in a single gummy.
If you are a parent, you will know that kids are obsessed with dinosaurs. There are also many gummy products shaped in dinosaurs. But, Haribo’s look prettier with different colors in a single gummy. A bag has differently shaped dinosaurs such as T-Rex, Stegosaurus, Brontosaurus, and Triceratops. Each bag has a combination of flavors including Strawberry, Mango, Banana, Melon, and Blackcurrant.
What? Smurfs? You can meet these globally popular characters in a Haribo Smurfs bag. The gummies shaped in these little blue creatures have normal and sour-flavored versions. The normal one has fruit flavors while the sour version is sugar-coated with some sour kick.
I just introduced 6 products out of 20 gummy products. The others include Peaches, Berries, Happy Cherries, Frogs, Fruit Salad, Fizzy Cola, Ginger Lemon, Roulette, Rattle Snakes, Alphabet Letters, Sour Cubes, Sour Streamers, Sour S’ghetti, and Seasonal.
Recommended Daily Sugar Intake
I know that these gummies are all tasty and addictive. But, we know that too much is bad. Then, how much is too much for us? This section will explain a recommended daily sugar intake for adult men, women, and kids.
According to this health blog, the American Heart Association recommends not to consume more than the following amount of sugar:
- Men: 37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons
- Women: 25 grams or 6 teaspoons
For those 2 years and older, this blog post says that the American Heart Association recommends for the kids not to take more than 6 teaspoons (25g) per day. So, how much are these in a bag of gummies? If we turn these recommended values into a bag of Haribo Goldbears, the 5 oz bag contains 100 kcal or 14g sugar. So, it would be safe for kids, men, and women to finish a bag. For your reference, the 4.5 oz Sour Goldbears contains 110 kcal or 16g sugar.
Although the 5 oz bag is safe, it does not mean that you can have a 5 oz bag every single day. I don’t have medical knowledge, but I personally think that too often is also bad just like too much is bad. So, I don’t think I will give my kids a bag every day, and I hope you wouldn’t.
The Haribo Gummies have been around with us for 90 years. It went through many historical moments and survived. When adults see one of these products, it will remind them of beautiful childhood memory which is something we want to give to our children. As I analyzed over 6,500 customer reviews, most of the consumers expressed positive sentiments toward Haribo Gummy Bears. And, the trendline from Google Trend tells us that the popularity and people’s interest in these gummies are likely to continue for many years to come.
So, I don’t think a bag of sugary gummy bag with your kids or friends would not be a bag idea.
