Everyone knows the importance of a healthy diet. But, most of them don’t know how to do and how to start. People would buy some books that introduce food recipes, explain ingredients and show nice food photos. They would make a few meals first and then give up. It is time-consuming, expensive, and generate much food waste. PlateJoy was born to solve these problems in an easy and an affordable way.

PlateJoy is a firm and an app that designs weekly meal plans for its users based on an individual’s specific needs and circumstances. This post will explain and review this app and share my findings. First, let’s find out what is PlateJoy in detail.

What is PlateJoy

PlateJoy is a service that provides personalized meal planning based on your inputs such as nutrition needs, fitness goals, taste preferences, dietary requirements, schedules, and more. It is like your personal meal planner that knows you better than anyone else. PlateJoy is also a tech company that analyzes 50 different data points from you to recommend the most suitable meal plans for you.

In addition to meal planning, the app will generate a shopping list that has the ingredients for the planned foods. You can also select an option to send the shopping list to a large grocery store for delivery. You can use PlateJoy by joining their monthly membership. Before the paid subscription, you can have a free trial to experience their service and functionality of the app.

Major Features

You first need to download PlateJoy’s free app on your smartphone. It supports both Andriod and iOS. Once you download and start your membership, you will go through these four major steps.

Custom Meal Plan

You will tell them about your dietary restrictions, health goals, time restrictions, and the number of meals you want to have planned. PlateJoy will use 50 different data points to create a customized meal plan just for you. As you answered their questions, they will know what your needs and keep using your data for future plans, which will save time.

Smart Grocery List

The app also has a smart grocery feature where you can save what you have in your pantry. Using the data, you can avoid buying redundant ingredients, which will reduce food waste and save money. The smart list will be helpful for your grocery shopping.

Meal Plans by Experts

PlateJoy’s nutritionists and flavor experts have developed diverse meal plans that will cover your needs. The food is not only nutritious but also tasty.

Grocery Delivery

PlateJoy has adopted Instacart for them to send your grocery list directly to grocery retailers. It will be much faster and easier.

Types of Custom Meal

PlateJoy offers 12 different meal plans. This section explains about each plan. After this section, for those who are not familiar diet terms, I did some research and added an explanation.

Low Carb

When you want to reduce your weight or lower sugar in your blood, this low carb plan will be good for you. Low carb will focus on protein and healthy fats. If you started working out, this option will be great for you as well.

Clean Eating

The ingredients in this option are close to nature. Using what nature has given us, you can prepare nutritious and healthy foods. There will be many benefits you can gain by using nature-friendly ingredients.


PlateJoy has many plans for Keto dieters. The firm has Keto experts and has devised a lot of meal choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you don’t know about Keto diet, scroll down to the next section where I explain about Keto and its benefits.


PlateJoy’s Paleo meal plans focus on all-natural foods including meats and vegetables. I also explain about Paleo in the next section.


If you a vegetarian, here is the right option. You can have fresh fruits, veggies, and proteins from plants.


Vegan option means that you are free from animal by-products including meat and dairy. This plan only focuses on meals from plants.


This plan option is for seafood lovers. The plan contains plenty of food options using fish, shellfish, and other seafood ingredients.

Gluten Free

If you don’t want gluten in your meal due to personal preference or medical conditions, this food plan will give you tons of different gluten-free options.

Dairy Free

Are you lactose intolerant or do you just hate dairy products? This option will get rid of any milk, cheese, butter, or other dairy ingredients in your meals.

Allergy Free

Allergy-free plans take care of common allergens such as nuts, dairy, soy, and others. You can use your app to tell allergenic ingredients, then they will create custom allergy-free meal plans just for you.

Batch Cooking

Many of us are busy dealing with our schedules and our kids’. Batch cooking will introduce meal plans that you can prepare meals in advance. You can make meals for the coming week or busy period. This will help you to save time and money.

Kid Friendly

Finally, they didn’t forget the struggle we deal with our picky kids. This kid-friendly plan will help us to feed our kids without stress and chasing.

Diets You Want to Know About

Maybe some of you are not familiar with diet names and what they do. In this section, I will explain about some of the diets that were included in the plans above. After reading this, you also might want to join a diet to keep yourself healthy.

Low Carb

Low carb, or carbohydrates, aims to reduce consumption of carb-rich foods such as pasta, bread, noodle, and sugary foods. In a low carb diet, you will eat foods having protein, natural fats, and vegetables. According to the food expert website, low-carb diets helped participants to lose weight and improve health. This diet method has been around for decades, and many doctors recommend this method for healthy and weight-losing diet.


Ketogenic, or keto, diet is high-fat, low-carb diet that helps people to burn fat effectively. This method is also recommended by many doctors as a way to get rid of body fat without feeling hunger. It is also known to be effective for type 2 diabetes.


The purpose of the Paleo diet is to replicate how our ancestors ate thousands of years ago. It is not exactly known that what human beings back then ate, but scientists believe that they consumed foods in a whole food form. Then, why would we want to copy their eating habits? That is because the way they lived – eating whole foods and actively hunting and gathering – presumably led to much lower rates of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases. It is said that this diet habit leads to weight loss and health improvements.

Vegetarian vs. Vegan

Let me admit that I often get confused between vegetarian and vegan. Let me explain each of them.

  • Vegetarian: Vegetarian Society defines that vegetarians are those who do not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish, or any by-products of animals. So, vegetarian diets consist of fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts, and seeds. Depending on your vegetarian type, you can add dairy and eggs.
  • Lacto-ovo Vegetarians: Vegetarians who don’t eat all animal meat, but consume dairy and egg products.
  • Lacto Vegetarians: They do not consume animal meat and eggs, but do eat dairy products
  • Ovo Vegetarians: They avoid all animal products except eggs.
  • Vegans: They avoid all animal and animal-derived products.
  • Vegans: So, as you noticed, vegans are a type of vegetarians, but they have the strictest rule in consuming animal products. They do not consume any animal-derived foods.

The reason behind the vegetarian rules is more related to the prevention of animal cruelty and exploitation. Also, by vegetarian diets, they want to protect the environment and improve their health. In terms of nutrition, researchers believe that these diets lead to less saturated fat and cholesterol. (reference: Health Line)


Pescatarians are those who add fish and seafood to their vegetarian diet. There are several reasons why people avoid animal meat but still eat fish. Some people decide to add fish for the health benefits (healthy heart) they can get from fish. For some, it can be just because of the taste. (reference: Health Line)

Gluten Free

As the name explains, gluten free diet avoid foods containing gluten. The substance is found in a wide range of foods such as flour, bread, baked goods, cereals, pasta, processed foods, snacks, beer, seasonings, sauces, stock cubes, and more. So, if you are diagnosed with coeliac disease, you should avoid any of these foods. Consuming tiny amount of gluten can cause damage to your small bowel. (reference: Health Direct)

So far, we have learned major features of PlateJoy and definitions of those diet options. Now, let’s find out their pricing plans.

Pricing Plans

There are two types of subscription types.

PlateJoy Meal Planning: 6 months – $69 USD and 12 months – $99 USD. This is equivalent of around 8 to 12 dollars per month, and it will be billed in one installment.

PlateJoy Weight Loss: 3 months – $89USD and 6 months – $119USD. This is around $20 – 30 per month. It will also be billed in one installment.

How Customers Think About This PlateJoy

When you see product introduction from a company, you will always hear great things about it. No company will reveal any weaknesses or defects of the product, obviously. So, as a consumer, it is wiser to doubt what they say and do your own research before making a final purchase decision. In this section, we will learn how actual users think about PlateJoy. How can we measure these? We can do this by using data analysis techniques called sentiment analysis.

You don’t have to be scared by the technical term. I did the technical part and you can just look at pretty graphs. In this section, I will show you two types of graphs – word cloud and customer sentiment chart. For the analysis, I’ve compiled more than 150 customer reviews from TrustPilot and conducted analysis to summarize them. I will show you the result in a word cloud and a customer sentiments chart. And, lastly, I will share a PlateJoy’s Google trend result that shows the level of interest from people.

Word Cloud

Word cloud is one of the great and fun ways to understand customer sentiments toward a product or a service. In a word cloud, you can see specific words in different sizes. The larger it is, the more people used that word to describe the product. For this word cloud, I used the titles of the reviews, since people put the essence of their opinions in the title. The 150+ reviews allowed me to generate an interesting word cloud that let me reach a positive conclusion. Take a look!

Understanding the word cloud is easy. Just follow your eyes and see what you see. You will see that most of the big words are all positive. This means that customers have had a positive experience with the service. People used words like “love”, “easy”, “good”, “lifesaver”, and more positive terms to describe this product.

This word cloud alone may have already given you a good impression since the result was quite positive. To give you a bit more details, I will share another sentiment analysis.

Customer Sentiments

In the word cloud, we were able to observe what descriptive words people used to talk about PlateJoy. As mentioned, the word cloud is based on the titles of customer reviews, but the sentiment analysis graph was generated by the contents of the reviews. In the sentiment analysis, we will see more specific types of feeling that people showed in their review. In the analysis, you can see 10 different sentiments such as positive, negative, trust, anticipation, joy, fear, sadness, anger, surprise, and disgust.

The technology behind the chart is straightforward. The analysis algorithm holds 10 different lists – each list containing words that are mapped to one of the 10 sentiments. When this algorithm runs, it checks and matches with one of the sentiments. When matched, it is counted as one and is categorized in one of the 10 sentiments. My analysis on the positive reviews appears as below.

The chart is also not difficult to understand. You can see that the positive sentiment is ranked number one. The first rank is followed by “trust”, “anticipation”, “joy” and “negative”. It does have some negative opinions, but most of the people had positive sentiment toward the service, and many of the top rankers are all positive sentiments.

If the graph above is difficult to interpret, the following graph will be much easier. It simply shows how much the customer reviews are positive or negative.

As you can see, more than half of the customers came back and left positive feedback toward PlateJoy.

Google Trend

As the final segment of analysis, let me share the trend of PlateJoy. I used Google Trend to check how frequently “platejoy” is searched on Google over the past 5 years. Google Trend is a useful tool to measure the interest of people. The more frequently people search on Google, the more popular or trendy it is. The Google Trend result below (not visible on mobile phones) for PlateJoy below shows that people have increasingly shown an interest in the service.


My customer review analysis reveals that most of the people have been happy with their experience with PlateJoy. By that, we can conclude that PlateJoy is a great service that really takes care of your meal plans in an easy and convenient way as promised by them.
