“Make it feel like a step in your grooming routine” – Simon, one of the founders explained in Quip’s website to explain why the name is “quip”. I read through the whole contents on their website, and I liked the motives behind Quip toothbrush. From the birth story of Quip toothbrush to compelling summary view of customer reviews, you will find useful information from this post, which will help your purchase decision.
When I review a product, I always start my research on the firm that created the product. It is an important step to check their history and principle behind their product. That is because I believe that they compose the very foundation of a product and closely affect the quality.
Two founders, Simon Enever and Bill May, founded Quip in New York, the U.S., in 2015. The idea behind the Quip toothbrush was the fact that people often do not follow proper dental care such as brushing teeth twice a day. It was contradictory to the fact that most of the people do care about grooming. So, the two founders wanted to “make it feel like a step in your grooming routine.”
What would make their goal achievable? The answer they found was developing an electronic toothbrush that is stylish, affordable and high-quality. As Simon’s dentist advised, he tried to “buy the cheapest vibrating brush with a 2-minute timer.” But, he couldn’t find a product that meets the requirements. Vibrating brush in the market was very expensive and didn’t have satisfactory vibrations and timer. As he found these deficiencies, he started designing Quip toothbrush.
About the Toothbrush
After learning from their development story, I learned that the core principle is product design. A well-designed vibrating toothbrush, as they thought, would help people to have healthy habits such as brushing softly twice a day for 2 minutes as recommended by the dentist. Also, it will include regularly replace your brush and see a dentist when needed. So, they have incorporated all these necessities into their product and service as I will explain in the next section.
Quip Toothbrush Features
So, what features is a Quip toothbrush equipped with? They applied only essential functionalities to their product.
Unlike other vibrating toothbrush products that have many modes, Quip toothbrush has only one. Many of you may have experienced that when you started using an electronic toothbrush, you don’t know what mode you should choose. With Quip toothbrush, just pick one. In addition, the guides feature ensures that you brush for 2 minutes with 30 section intervals for softer brushing.
If you are a frequent traveler, their wall mount and travel cover cloud be useful for your trip. They are designed to fit Quip toothbrush, so it would be more hygiene to keep your brush in the cover. In addition to the travel set, the toothbrush design itself is slim, and what’s best, you don’t have to carry a charger. I will put a YouTube video for you to have a real look at Quip toothbrush.
When you subscribe to Quip’s refill plan, they will deliver a new brush, a battery, and toothbrush every 3 months. I think that they did a good job with their refill plan in terms of price and components within the plan.
As we’ve discovered their features, let’s find out their pricing plans.
One of the most attractive points that Quip has is its affordable price options. Please have a look at the following list:
- Electric toothbrush set: $40
- refill plan: pay extra $10, then you will get a new brush head, battery, and toothpaste every 3 months.
- Kids starter sets: $25
- refill plan: pay extra $10 for a new brush head, battery, and watermelon anticavity toothpaste.
- Electric couples set: $75
- refill plan: pay extra $20 for two new brush heads, two batteries, and two tubes of toothpaste.
All refill plans come with a lifetime warranty. Moreover, your first refill is free. The subscription plan is not a lock-in contract that you can cancel anytime. Of course, you can buy only the toothbrush without a refill plan. But, I think even with the refill plan, the total price is not as expensive as other electric toothbrush products.
If you want to purchase the refill set once off, you can still order the refills separately without subscribing to the refill plan. There are two more supplies you can buy in addition to the toothbrush.
- Multi-use travel cover: $5, you can use it as a stand, as a cover, or as a mirror mount. The cover looks clean and simple, but it looks like quite handy.
- Travel toothpaste: $2.5, if you want a smaller toothpaste for your trip, you can order a travel toothpaste. It’s 0.85 oz that lasts around 2 weeks.
These two accessories are all one-time purchase products.
We’ve just learned the prices of Quip’s products. Let’s compare their prices to other popular electric brushes on the market.
Comparison with Other Vibrating Toothbrushes
To pick candidates, I referred to this post, The 5 Best Electric Toothbrushes, According to Dentists.
- Foreo ISSA 2 Toothbrush: $169
- Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Toothbrush: $80
- Rotadent Contour: $117
- Oral-B Pro 1000 Power Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush Powered by Braun: $69
- Philips Sonicare Flexcare Plus Sonic Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush: $130
As I ran the comparison, two obvious facts surfaced. One is that these other products are twice or three times more expensive than Quip is. The other is that their designs looked bulky and heavy. I recommend you to go to the website and see their design. Then, you will realize that Quip looks much smarter, simpler, and lighter.
How Customers Think About Quip Toothbrush
When you see product introduction from a firm, you will always hear great things about it. No company will reveal any weaknesses or any defects of their products obviously. So, as a consumer, it will be wiser to doubt what they say and do your own research before making a purchase decision. In this section, we will learn how actual users think about Quip toothbrush and the firm’s service. How can we measure these? We can do this by using data analysis techniques called sentiment analysis.
You don’t have to be scared by the technical term. I did the technical part and you can just look at pretty graphs. In this section, I will show you two types of graphs – word cloud and customer sentiment chart. For the analysis, I’ve compiled more than whopping 7000 customer reviews from the Quip’s website and run analysis to summarize them. I will show you the result in a word cloud and a customer sentiments chart. And, lastly, I will share a Quip toothbrush’s Google trend result.
Word cloud is one of the great and fun ways to understand customer sentiments toward a product or a service. In a word cloud, you can see specific words in different sizes. The larger it is, the more people used that word to describe the product. For this word cloud, I used the titles of the reviews, since people put the essence of their opinions in the title. The 7000+ reviews allowed me to generate an interesting word cloud that let me reach a positive conclusion. Have a look!
Understanding the word cloud is easy. Just follow your eyes and see what you see. You will see that most of the big words are all positive. This means that customers have had a positive experience with the service. People used words like “love”, “great”, “awesome”, “best”, “effective”, “convenient”, “easy”, and more positive terms to describe Quip. This word cloud alone may have already given you a good impression since the result was quite positive. To give you a bit more details, I will share another sentiment analysis.
In the word cloud, we were able to observe what descriptive words people used to talk about Quip toothbrush. As mentioned, the word cloud is based on the titles of customer reviews, but the sentiment analysis graph was generated by the contents of the reviews. In the sentiment analysis, we will see more specific types of feeling that people showed in their review. In the analysis, you can see 10 different sentiments such as positive, negative, trust, anticipation, joy, fear, sadness, anger, surprise, and disgust.
The technology behind the chart is straightforward. The analysis algorithm holds 10 different lists – each list containing words that are mapped to one of the 10 sentiments. When this algorithm runs, it checks and matches with one of the sentiments. When matched, it is counted as one and is categorized in one of the 10 sentiments. My analysis on the positive reviews appears as below.
The chart is also not difficult to understand. You can see that the positive sentiment is ranked number one. The first rank is followed by “negative”, “trust”, “anticipation”, “sadness”, and “joy”. It does have negative opinions, but most of the people had positive sentiment toward the service that the positive sentiment took the first rank.
As the last piece of analysis, let me share the trend of Quip toothbrush. I used Google Trend to check how “Quip toothbrush” is searched on Google over the past 12 months and I found that people increasingly searched for Quip toothbrush, which shows an uptrend.
Considering what Quip claims about their product and aggregated analysis of customer reviews, I believe that Quip toothbrush has been trusted and loved by many people. If you are looking for an electric toothbrush, I will highly recommend Quip. Happy brushing!
