This post explains how to undisable an iPod step-by-step. For those who might find this written guide difficult, I embedded a YouTube video. Let’s jump right into how to unlock your iPod.

How to undisable an iPod

I understand that you forgot your passcode and failed to enter the correct one, which locked your iPod. If you fail to remember your passcode, you will have to delete your iPod, which will remove all of your data and settings. If you have made a backup before you forgot your passcode, you can still go back to the state when you made that backup. Otherwise, there is not a way to restore the data on your iPod. It is Apple’s policy.

Follow the steps to remove your device and restore it with your backup.

  1. Prepare your computer. If you don’t have one at the moment, you can borrow from someone else.
    • Don’t connect your iPod to the computer yet.
  2. Enter into the Recovery screen by following a different step by your iPod model:
    • If you have the recent iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold the Side (or Top) button until the power-off slider shows. Move the slider to power off your iPod. Now, connect your iPod to the computer WHILE holding the volume down button. Keep holding it until you see the recovery screen.
    • If you have the iPod touch 6th generation or earlier: Press and hold the Side (or Top) button until the power-off slider shows. Move the slider to power off your iPod. Now, connect your iPod to the computer WHILE holding the Home button. Keep holding it until you see the recovery screen.
  3. Now you need to find your iPod on your computer. The way to find it also differs from your Mac OS version (if you are using Mac, not PC) and iTunes version. If you want to know how to check your Mac OS version, check this section below.
    • If you use macOS Catalina or above, your iPod will appear in the left sidebar on the Finder window. Once you find it, click it.
    • If you have an earlier Mac OS version, start iTunes.
      • If your iTunes version is 12 or above, find the iPod icon (like the image below) at the top left corner of the window. If your iTunes version is lower, it will be in the upper right corner.
  1. Once you locate the icon, click it.
  2. When the Restore or Update window appears, choose Restore, which will start downloading software for your iPod. If the download takes more than 15 minutes, the iPod will leave recovery mode. You will have to repeat steps 2 – 6.
  3. Wait until the process is completed. After that, you can set up and use your iPod.
Undisable your iPod and use it again.

How to check your Mac OS version

Checking your Mac OS version is easy.

  • Go to the top left corner to find the small apple icon.
  • Click the icon and select “About This Mac”.
  • A new window will pop up. In the default overview tab, you can find your OS version name in the biggest bold font.
    • FYI, The version number of Catalina starts from 10.15 (Wikipedia) So, the version below is lower than Catalina.
