This post will share my Zenni Optical reviews and explain the key benefits you can gain from their service. This article also has my analysis of customer reviews to reveal how actual customers think about their products and services.
My Thought about Zenni
Zenni Optical is an online eyeglasses store. When I had to buy my glasses, I usually went to an offline store. I had to measure my eyesight and actually look frames. More importantly, I wanted to know how I look with several pairs of glasses before picking the final one. But, it was not very convenient experience because I always had to ask staffs to show me this and that. Also, because of my bad eyesight, it was difficult to see how I look by myself. I believe it was a norm for others too.
My impression of Zenni is that they understood the needs of people and provided online solutions. When I checked their website, the first thing that caught my attention was the price tags. Offline stores sell expensive frames, and honestly, it was not easy for me to ask “can you show me the cheapest options first?” Since it is online, you can just look at all possible options without anyone’s interruption.
About Zenni Optical
The firm was founded by two scientists in 2003 in the San Francisco Bay Area. They started the firm with the mission to make people look good while wearing an affordable pair of glasses. Since the start, Zenni Optical quickly has grown into a leading online optical store. They have various product categories including prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, sports glasses, and goggles.
Key Features of Zenni Optical Online
I checked their menus and tried to order glasses to experience the whole process. I felt that it was designed straightforward that I did not have any difficulty to browse through menus and got to the ordering stage. I learned that there are some key features that Zenni Optical provides, and I listed them as below.
The biggest reason why we visit an offline store is to actually try on glasses. Their website removed that inconvenience by introducing virtual try-on. On their website, you can pick your favorite style and virtually try that on. Even if your eyesight is bad and cannot see the screen clearly without your glasses, the website records how you look so that you can check it after record with your glasses on.
If you don’t like trying it, you can use Zenni’s human models and let them try glasses on. The range of the models covers diverse ethnicities, genders, and ages. With their models, you can get a sense of how you would look with the glasses you picked. The try-on photos with the models or yourself are not just 2D front headshot. It is 3 dimensional, and when you move your mouse cursor, the face on the photo also moves. With this, you can check the side looks with your glasses as well.
Measure Pupillary Distance
Pupillary Distance (PD) refers to the distance between the centers of your pupils. The measurement is used to decide where you look through your glasses lens and should be as accurate as possible. When you see an eye doctor, you will usually be given your PD during an eye exam. However, if you or your doctor forgot, you can use the guidance and downloadable sheet that Zenni provides to measure PD at home.
I’ve included a link to their website where you can find the ruler to measure your PD. On that web page, you can also find the easy steps and useful infographic.
Wide Range of Glasses
I found that Zenni Optical has a wide range of products. It has three high-level categories – women, men, and kids. When you select one of them, it shows many sub-categories.
- Premium sunglasses
- New arrivals
- Clip-on sets
- Carbon fiber
- Recent releases
- Timo collection
- Desert collection
- North coast collection
- LA collection
These sub-categories are shown on the top menu. If you scroll down to the bottom of the main homepage, you will see many more categories. What caught my attention was the great deals section that has $6.95 glasses, glasses under $10, glasses under $20, and clearance. I felt that the overall prices were not bad. But, if you are looking for more affordable ranges, I think these options would be great for you.
Zenni Optical has various categories and a wide range of products. To help you to easily find your style, they developed the trademarked Zenni Frame Finder. The finder has detail filters to narrow product options. In the filter, you can select the color, shape, material, size, and features. What’s interesting to me was the feature filter. The feature had eight different options such as:
- custom engraving
- extended fit
- nose pads
- petite fit
- spring hinges
- universal bridge fit
Using different designs and features, we can design our glasses. The finder is gender-specific. So, please make sure that you find the right gender category at the top of the main page.
All glasses on Zenni Optical include free anti-scratch coating, single vision lens, UV protection, hard case, and cleaning cloth. This applies to those great-deal glasses as well.
You might experience some difficulty while trying on glasses or making your final order. The Zenni Optical website has a LiveChat feature that you can ask questions. LiveChat is available all day and all night. They also have a telephone line that is available between 5AM – 9PM PST.
Zenni Optical has a blog where you can find useful tips and topics including fashing, eye care, and asking questions to an optician. Especially, if you have more questions about lenses, frames or your prescriptions, the ask-an-optician feature can be useful for you.
How People Think About Zenni Optical
When you see product introduction from a company, you will always hear great things about it. No company will reveal any weaknesses or defects of the product, obviously. So, as a consumer, it is wiser to doubt what they say and do your own research before making a final purchase decision. In this section, we will learn how actual users think about Zenni Optical. How can we measure these? We can do this by using data analysis techniques called sentiment analysis.
You don’t have to be scared by the technical term. I did the technical part and you can just look at pretty graphs. In this section, I will show you two types of graphs – word cloud and customer sentiment chart. For the analysis, I’ve compiled more than 50,000 customer reviews from TrustPilot and conducted analysis to summarize them. I will show you the result in a word cloud and a customer sentiments chart. And, lastly, I will share a Zenni Optical’s Google trend result that shows the level of interest from people.
Word cloud is one of the great and fun ways to understand customer sentiments toward a product or a service. In a word cloud, you can see specific words in different sizes. The larger it is, the more people used that word to describe the product. For this word cloud, I used the titles of the reviews, since people put the essence of their opinions in the title. The 50,000+ reviews allowed me to generate an interesting word cloud that let me reach a positive conclusion. Let’s have a look!
Understanding the word cloud is easy. Just follow your eyes and see what you see. You will see that most of the big words are all positive. This means that customers have had a positive experience with their product and service. People used words like “love”, “great”, “easy”, “excellent”, “great price”, and more positive terms to describe this online store.
In the word cloud, we were able to observe what descriptive words people used to talk about Zenni Optical. As mentioned, the word cloud is based on the titles of customer reviews, but the sentiment analysis graph was generated by the contents of the reviews. In the sentiment analysis, we will see more specific types of feeling that people showed in their review. In the analysis, you can see 10 different sentiments such as positive, negative, trust, anticipation, joy, fear, sadness, anger, surprise, and disgust.
The technology behind the chart is straightforward. The analysis algorithm holds 10 different lists – each list containing words that are mapped to one of the 10 sentiments. When this algorithm runs, it checks and matches with one of the sentiments. When matched, it is counted as one and is categorized in one of the 10 sentiments. My analysis on the positive reviews appears as below.
The chart is also not difficult to understand. You can see that the positive sentiment is ranked number one. The first rank is followed by “negative”, “trust”, “anticipation”, “sadness” and “fear”. It does have some negative opinions, but overall, people expressed more positive sentiments than negative ones. So my customer review analysis told me that many people have a positive experience with Zenni Optical.
As the final segment of analysis, let me share the trend of Zenni Optical. I used Google Trend to check how frequently “Zenni Optical” is searched on Google over the past 5 years. Google Trend is a useful tool to measure the interest of people. The more frequently people search on Google, the more popular or trendy it is. The Google Trend (may not visible on a mobile phone) of the product below shows that people have consistently shown an interest in the online eyewear store over the period.
Please note that this is a US trend. If we break down by state, we can see that the biggest interest has come from Alaska followed by Maine, North Dakoda, South Dakoda, and Vermont. To see the state list, click the list icon at the bottom right, and it will turn to the list.
Takeaways from the Analysis
I used these tactics to analyze the reviews of a product or a service. And, I often compiled customer reviews to extract the gist of people’s sentiments. This Zenni Optical reviews post took me the longest time to finish my analysis due to the largest number of customer reviews I’ve ever collected. In data analytics, the more data the more accurate. I believe that this rule applies to Zenni Optical, which supports that fact that people had a positive experience with their product and service.
Is online a trendy channel to purchase glasses?
We learned that Zenni Optical has been maintaining its trend over the past 5 years. I became curious if online shopping for eyeglasses is a common thing to do these days, and how about the future? According to this comprehensive report from Arizton, the distribution channels in the eyeglasses are categorized into retail stores, hospitals and clinics, and online stores. The largest segment was taken by retail stores occupying over 59% of the total market share in 2017. It is expected to generate a revenue of $42.65 billion by 2023.
The report further explains that “The trend of researching products online and purchasing offline is helping retailer leverage this opportunity and ensure last-minute fulfillment of orders.” This tells us that people will keep using an online store to find their style and Zenni Optical will try to capture customers before leaving to buy glasses offline.
As I explored their products and services on the website, it seems that they designed it in a way that people search their glasses style, try them on, and even measure their PD. In addition, their prices looked very reasonable and had affordable options as well. If you want to buy your main glasses or want to have a spare pair of glasses in a different style, I think Zenni Optical is a great place to go.
